Scenes from the Greece-Turkey border resemble a World War I battle as Greeks defend Europe's frontier

As Greece continues to battle with the flood of migrants sent from Turkey to breach its border, video footage has emerged showing scenes that resemble the First World War as Greek authorities fight to defend Europe's frontier.

At Greece's border with Turkey - the gateway into the European Union - Greek border forces are bathed in noxious fumes as Turkish police and, allegedly, Turkish-armed migrants blast them with tear gas.

Turkey's Islamist leader, President Recep Erdogan, triggered the crisis last month when he flouted Turkey's 6 billion euros deal with the EU and opened the gates, allowing free passage for migrants to pass through the country and flood Europe.

The EU has allocated nearly all the promised €6bn fund for Syrian refugees in Turkey.

However, the Turkish regime spent only €3.2bn of the money on the agreed projects, which have included building schools and health centers.

Last Wednesday, it was believed that Erdogan was bringing the border crisis to an end by deciding that he would shut down the Turkish side of the frontier for illegal migrants wishing to break into Europe, due to the risk of spreading coronavirus.

According to Breitbart, however, it seems that thousands of migrants remain at the border regardless.

Turkish personnel are continuing to support their efforts to punch through Greece’s protective fences — not least by bombarding their Greek counterparts with tear gas in social media footage which has been circulated by the Greek press.

Footage shot from the Greek side of the border and shared by Greek media outlet Proto Thema appears to show Greek personnel and army ambulances bathed in noxious fumes.

The scenes are reminiscent of the infamous gas attacks on the trenches of the First World War following one such bombardment.

The Greeks have themselves used tear gas to try and repel illegal aliens hurling rocks and petrol bombs at them, or attempting to tear down or otherwise dismantle border fencing.

Recent videos also show a number of migrants at the fences now appear to have been supplied with gas masks so they can sustain their attacks on the border regardless.

Turkish officials have previously claimed that at least 100,000 migrants have been released into Greece.

The Greek government disputes this claim, saying they have successfully held back tens of thousands and estimating the number who have made it through the land border in the hundreds.

Their task has not been made easier by the European Union’s past refusal to provide funding for robust border fences, which the bloc denounced as “pointless.”

“We are against building walls,” declared then-European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs, and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos, as recently as 2018.
