A deceptively edited quote from President Donald Trump's recent call with state governors, regarding medical ventilators, was shared by at least eight New York Times authors on Monday.

The edited quote created the false impression that Trump was denying federal support for much-needed ventilators for hospitals treating coronavirus victims.

In Trump's message, he recommended that states procure ventilators because it would be quicker, adding the federal government “will be backing you.”

But the time journalists edited out the bulk of the president’s statement and shared an out of context quote on social media.

The partial quote, which was mostly misleading, was then boosted by a CNN correspondent before becoming the main headline at the left-wing Huffington Post.

The journalists are still yet to retract or delete their misleading comments despite a growing public backlash.

The journalists are still yet to retract or delete their misleading comments despite a growing public backlash.

On Monday, eight journalists tweeted a link to a Times article containing Trump’s full statement to state governors in which the president advised they shouldn’t wait for the federal government to fill the increasing demand for respirators needed to treat coronavirus patients.

President Trump told the governors during the Monday conference:

“Respirators, ventilators, all of the equipment — try getting it yourselves."

“We will be backing you, but try getting it yourselves. Point of sales, much better, much more direct if you can get it yourself.”

But the Times journalists left out most of what the president said in the body of their posts.

Times national correspondent, Julie Bosman, just tweeted the first third of the president’s statement, while leaving out the part where he said the federal government would back the states.

Bosman then reacted to the backlash by inaccurately claiming that “the second part of the quote repeats the first part, twice.”

But in reality, the second part of Trump's statement said the federal government “will be backing you [the states].”

The partial quote, which was mostly misleading, also became the main headline at the left-wing Huffington Post.

Another member of the Times editorial board, Mara Gay, also lefts out the majority of Trump's quote.

Gay falsely accused the president of telling governors that “they are on their own.”

But the President's full quote says the federal government “will be backing you.”

Other journalist joined the liberal bandwagon in tweeting a partial section of Trump's quote, those included:

  • White House correspondent Peter Baker
  • Northwest reporter Mike Baker
  • Arts reporter Michael Cooper
  • investigative reporter Sharon LaFraniere
  • Editor Clifford Levy
  • Contributor Aaron E. Carroll

Trump reacted to the news by tweeting:

The “Times” is a disgrace to journalism!
