A second Democrat mayor has signed an emergency order amid the coronavirus crisis to be granted new powers to ban the sale and transportation of guns.

Last week, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell (D) signed an emergency order allowing her to ban firearms sales and transportation.

On Monday, Cantrell signed a follow-up proclamation on further emphasizing her emergency powers to “suspend or limit the sale, dispensing, or transportation, of alcoholic beverages.”

The mayor signed the order as the city, and many other cities across the United States, are battling the global COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the declaration signed by Mayor Cantrell, she now has the power to restrict the sale and transportation of guns and other items.

Cantrell is now “empowered, if necessary, to suspend or limit the sale of alcoholic beverages, firearms, explosives, and combustibles,” the order states.

On Monday, the Second Amendment Foundation responded immediately to Cantrell’s claims of emergency powers over firearms.

The organization reminded the mayor that they sued over Second Amendment infringement following Hurricane Katrina and will do so during the coronavirus crisis if necessary.

SAF executive vice president Alan Gottlieb said:

"Following Hurricane Katrina, we sued the city when then-Mayor Ray Nagin’s administration began confiscating firearms from law-abiding citizens for no good reason.

"The federal court order the city to cease confiscations.

"We sued New Orleans then, and we’ll do it again.

"The presence of a nasty disease does not suspend any part of the Bill of Rights, no matter what some municipal, state or even federal politician may think.

"While we certainly recognize the seriousness of this virus and its ability to spread rapidly, treating Covid-19 and taking steps to prevent it from infecting more people has nothing at all to do with the exercise of the right to keep and bear arms under the Second Amendment."

“People legally licensed to carry should not have their right to do so suddenly curtailed because some politician panicked," Gottlieb adds.

"We didn’t allow it before, and we’re not going to allow it now.”

The Democrat mayor of Champaign, Illinois, Deborah Frank Feinen, also signed a similar emergency order

As Neon Nettle previously reported, the Democrat mayor of Champaign, Illinois, issued a similar emergency order that gives her the power to halt ammunition and firearm sales in a bid to "combat" the coronavirus outbreak.

Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen (D) signed an executive order giving herself emergency powers to ban the sale of guns and alcohol.

Feinen assigned herself new powers to ban the sale of guns and alcohol by declaring a citywide emergency to address the spread of COVID-19 last Thursday.

The mayor will be authorized to enact her new privileges over a short period of time as the city tackles the spread of the coronavirus.

After signing the executive order, Feinen gained the power to ban the sale of guns, ammunition, alcohol, and gasoline, among other extreme measures.

Feinen could also cut off access to individuals' gas, water, or electricity.
