'It has never been as good as it is right now,' Trump said during a statement after his meeting.

President Donald Trump confirmed that India would buy $3 billion worth of military equipment as part of a massive deal signaling deepening ties between the two countries.

Both the United States and India were making progress on a big trade deal, Reuters reported.

Both sides are working to narrow differences on farm goods, medical devices, digital trade, and new tariffs.

The new growing defense and commercial ties were hailed by Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as they acknowledged that a trade deal between them remains some way off.

Trump said he was “optimistic” a trade pact could be reached, claiming ties between the U.S. and India had reached historical strength.

“It has never been as good as it is right now,” Trump said during a statement after his meeting.

India is set to buy 24 SeaHawk helicopters from Lockheed Martin, which are equipped with Hellfire missiles worth $2.6 billion.

The country also plans to follow-on order for six Apache helicopters.

India is moving to narrow the gap with China by modernizing its military and has increasingly turned to the United States over traditional supplier, Russia.
