New Bill to Punish States that Give Illegal Aliens Driver’s Licenses
Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) introduced the bill to the Senate
A new Republican bill aims to punish states that grant driver's licenses to illegal aliens by cutting their funding, according to reports.
The bill, named "Stop Greenlighting Driver Licenses for Illegal Immigrants Act," would cut funding to states from a program that issues federal criminal justice funding from the Department of Justice.
Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) introduced the bill to the Senate.
"Tennesseans know all too well what can happen when illegal immigrants are granted driver licenses," said a statement by Blackburn.
"While Tennessee and many other states prohibit driver licenses for illegal aliens, a growing number of states are moving in the opposite direction and unleashing dangerous open borders policies," she continued.
"Immigrants must follow the proper federal process and obtain citizenship or lawful status before obtaining a state driver's license," she added.
"In America, no one is above the law."
Advocates of the law that grants driver's licenses to illegals argue that such policies allow them to obtain insurance and put citizens in less risk.
But critics of the law argue it rewards criminality.
“The United States of America should be a sanctuary for law-abiding Americans, not criminal aliens,” Trump said at his State of the Union address last week.
On Thursday, Lawmakers in both chambers of the Democrat-controlled Virginia General Assembly voted to allow illegal aliens to obtain American driver's licenses.
Advocates packed the Capitol for the votes on Tuesday, as the debate unfolded on the floor of the Senate.

The Senate version of the legislation (SB 34), which allows undocumented immigrants to obtain a license after agreeing to meet all the necessary requirements, passed with a 22-18 vote.
Sen. Scott Surovell (D-Fairfax) proposed the measure that was passed by the state capitol’s newly minted Democratic majority.
In December, Illegal immigrants in New York were permitted to obtain driver’s licenses after a legal challenge was dismissed, making it the 13th state to allow the practice.
Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the Green Light Law earlier this year.
The bill, A03675B, also known as the "Driver's License Access and Privacy Act," passed the Democratically-controlled lower chamber of the New York State Legislature with a vote of 86-47.
