Dershowitz Calls Out Pelosi: ‘Impeachment Disappears' if Trump is Acquitted
Law professor says House Speaker doesn't understand impeachment
Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz, who will be an addition to President Donald Trump's impeachment legal defense team, slammed Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's recent statements claiming that the president is 'impeached forever.'
Dershowitz stated that impeachment “is only a grand jury presentment” and “disappears” after acquittal, just like an indictment does if someone is acquitted at trial.
The law professor added that if impeachment were permanent, it would mean the House proceedings would require “full due process. You need an adversarial system.”
“Nancy Pelosi doesn’t understand what impeachment is," Dershowitz said.
"What she has said is even if the president’s acquitted, the impeachment stands," he added.
"No. That’s like saying that if a person is indicted and the jury acquits 12-0 in five minutes, he’s still indicted," Dershowitz explained.
"No. The impeachment disappears. The impeachment is only a grand jury presentment.”
He later added:
“[I]f Pelosi maintains the position that impeachment is an end in and of itself, you need full due process."
"You need an adversarial system. You can’t go and announce, he’s been impeached, and it’ll be impeachment hanging over his head for the rest of his life.”
Last week, Pelosi gloated and celebrated as she signed a resolution to transmit two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump to the Senate for trial.
The House Speaker also handed out souvenir pens despite insisting it was a 'somber' occasion.

“Nancy Pelosi’s souvenir pens served up on silver platters to sign the sham articles of impeachment,” White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham tweeted in response.
“She was so somber as she gave them away to people like prizes.”
Pelosi did not seem so solemn or prayerful about Trump's impeachment during her appearance on "Real Time with Bill Maher," either.
The House Speaker spoke gleefully about her fellow democrats impeaching President Trump while reiterating her attacks against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
"The president was self-impeaching almost every single day," Pelosi said.
"And you're impeached forever," Pelosi replied with a big smile on her face as the audience applauded.
"No matter what the Senate does, that can never be erased."
"If I knew that the president was listening, I would want him to know that he is impeached forever," Pelosi said.
