Ilhan Omar: ‘We Must Stop Detaining’ Illegal Immigrants
Democratic rep uses ABC news story to back up her argument

Progressive Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar blasted the U.S. government for detaining illegal immigrants and called on them to cease the practice.
The Democratic rep tweeted an ABC News story about a tiny Georgia town that had more detained illegal immigrants than residents.
Omar argued that America shouldn’t be detaining those who cross the border illegally.
“This should never be the case,” she wrote.
“The cruelty of our immigration system becomes clearer every day," she argued.
"We must stop detaining immigrants and start giving them pathways to citizenship.”

This isn't the first time Omar has voiced her opposition to detaining foreign nationals who illegally cross America’s borders.
She said in May 2019:
“We need to abolish ICE and end-all inhumane detention and deportation programs."
"We need to fight back against the criminalization of immigrants."
“It’s un-American to criminalize immigrants for wanting to come to this country for a better life," she stated in a tweet.
"This is why ICE needs to be defunded,” she wrote in another tweet in June.
Omar (D-MN) blasted President Donald Trump's plan to create a dramatic shift in how the U.S. accepts people into the country.
This should never be the case.

“Today the president has unveiled an immigration plan that makes no mention of DACA, a program Trump unilaterally ended in late 2017, that has been hanging by a thread thanks to court injunctions,” Omar said during her speech last year.
“A plan that fails to make sure people with temporary protection status and deferred enforced departure recipients don’t have a path to a permanent status or citizenship."
"A plan that seeks to limit asylum seekers fleeing violence."
Last year, Omar declared that America "is Not Going to Be the Country of White People."
Leftist groups held a demonstration calling for Trump to be censured for his response to Omar’s statement that “some people did something” on 9/11.
Omar's supporters chanted “Hands off Ilhan” as a series of speeches blamed President Trump and Republicans for the so-called rise of “white supremacy masked as white nationalism.”
