Chichester Cathedral Choir Remember End of WW1 with 'Lest We Forget'
‘Lest We Forget’ released on the Signum Classics label
Marking one hundred years since the end of World War One, Chichester Cathedral Choir will commemorate this significant anniversary with a poignant collection of choral favorites that reflect the unprecedented scale of the conflict, and the great personal loss that occurred on the battlefields of Europe.
‘Lest We Forget’ released on the Signum Classics label, references the tragedy of war and the deaths of countless service personnel, whose sacrifice and courage stand out against the horrors of the conflict.
In the centenary year of the Armistice of 1918, it is fitting to remember again the human cost of war and the selfless acts of bravery on the battlefield.
Chichester Cathedral Choir is proud to have teamed up with Combat Stress, a charity founded shortly after the end of WW1 and an early pioneer in responding to the profound mental scars sustained by service personnel.
Director of Music at Chichester Cathedral Charles Harrison, whose own Grandfather fought during WW1, is delighted that this new album release will be supporting Combat Stress, who continue to provide invaluable support to those who suffer as a result of traumatic events experienced during their time with the armed services.
‘Lest We Forget’ brings together music and texts that reach remarkable depths of musical and artistic expression, and still resonate in the modern day.
Composers featured in the collection include giants of 19th and 20th-century British composition such as Stanford, Bainton, Elgar, Holst, Ireland, and Howells, whose works possess a plangency and resonance that has not diminished in the century since they were written.
Chichester Cathedral Choir continues with its tradition of producing world-class choral music in one of the UK’s most historic cathedral buildings and this latest recording released on Signum Classics, is a reminder of the important and integral role music has in the daily worshipping life of Chichester Cathedral.
