Massive 'Canyon Shaped' Hole Opens Up in SUN Triggering Solar Storm
NASA scientists are keeping a close eye on the huge coronal hole

Footage of a gigantic canyon-shaped hole opening up in the Sun’s atmosphere triggering a solar storm has gone viral.
NASA scientists are keeping a close eye on the huge coronal hole which became visible on Friday and is now directly facing the earth.
The opening triggered a geo storm which hit earth on Sunday, and is known to cause chaos with power grids and spacecraft.
The hole became visible not long after one opened up in the Sun’s corona last month.

According to The DS: Such gaps in the star’s outer atmosphere are not uncommon but this one is unusually large.
The colossal hole stretches more than 500,000 miles from the Sun’s north pole to its southern hemisphere.
Video posted by the YouTube channel Nemesis Maturity shows the huge canyon hole in the Earth's star.
Coronal holes are regions which allow charged particles to escape and flow towards Earth in what’s known as a solar wind.

The event was upgraded from a G1 to a G2 class geomagnetic storm amid fears it could mess with spacecraft navigation, satellites, power grids, damage transformers, and wreak havoc with migrating birds’ sense of direction.
The solar storm reached Earth on Sunday and built in intensity over a 24-hour period.
The activity led to a spectacular display of auroras (the Northern Lights) in Scotland and parts of northern England.
Ultraviolet telescopes onboard NASA’s solar dynamics observatory, which has been monitoring the Sun since 2011, have been trained on the canyon shaped hole.
The coronal development comes weeks after the mysterious shutdown of the National Solar Observatory in New Mexico that sparked a wave of conspiracy theories.
When it was reopened after being closed for 11 days in September, the FBI claimed the closure was due to an employee looking at child pornography using the facility’s WiFi network.
